Early Pregnancy Services

The Early Pregnancy Clinic at SA fertility is a dedicated service for couples who have experienced recurrent miscarriages. Studies have shown women who have had recurrent miscarriages are more likely to have a successful pregnancy if they feel well cared for and are closely examined by weekly or alternate weekly ultrasound examinations at a specialised miscarriage clinic.

Miscarriage

As spontaneous miscarriage is a common problem in pregnant women, if there is evidence of vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain and/or history of miscarriage, an early referral to the clinic would be appropriate.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancies are more likely to occur in women with a history of pelvic adhesions, endometriosis, damaged fallopian tubes and undergoing IVF. Should a patient have symptoms of pelvic pain, rapid bleeding or if there is a high risk, an early referral to the clinic would be appropriate.

Who do we see in an emergency?

•    Women with pelvic pain
•    Women with bleeding during the first trimester
•    Women with a suspected miscarriages/ectopic pregnancies

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

Recurrent miscarriage is defined as the loss of three or more consecutive pregnancies.

A large proportion of women will experience at least one miscarriage during their reproductive years.

Recurrent miscarriage

Most of the times there is no cause identified, however following conditions may be associated with recurrent pregnancy loss:

Genetic abnormalities (One or both partners)

Abnormalities of the womb (Birth defects)

Blood clotting problems (Thrombophilia)

Hormonal imbalances (Endocrine / Thyroid problem)

Immune factors (Natural Killer cells-NK, (Anti phospholipid syndrome-APS, Blocking Antibodies etc.)

Infections (Chronic infections)

Stress and Emotional factors

Management of Recurrent  Miscarriages

SA Fertility offers a dedicated holistic care and aim to explore all the evidence behind the causes of recurrent miscarriage and provide you with the correct investigation and appropriate management plan.

SA Fertility offer comprehensive blood tests for both the partners, including advanced ultrasound examinations. Also in selected cases offer advanced testing for problems with your immune system and Natural Killer cells.

In selected cases we will also discuss the role of embryo testing through PGS- Pre implantation Genetic Screening.

Counselling and Support

There is evidence that counselling and support plays an important part in the management of recurrent miscarriages.

We aim to provide holistic care with counselling and support.

The risk of miscarriage varies and often with proper investigation, treatment and support the chances of miscarriage may be reduced.
